I should have persevered a bit longer before making my previous post, above.
I have the backlight working now.
I had to short together two two pins on the rear of the module.

Display works nicely, once I'd figured out the I2C address.
The instructions in the first post say "If there a 3 sets of pads labelled A0, A1, & A2 then the default address will be 0x3F. If there are no pads the default address will be 0x27."
My board has no pads but the address is 0x3F.
Sorry about that. It looks like this has changed in our latest stock. I've now updated the first post to reflect this.

Yes this header is used to break the power to the backlight and git the option to control it from an external source. There should have been a jumper fitted to it. Sometimes this jumper can work loose in transit. You may want to check the packaging but also it can sometimes get lodged under the daughter board.

I've now checked the packaging and yes there's a little jumper in there!
Must have come off in transit.
The two pins are marked LED so I thought you must be able to connect some sort of LED to it. I've found no instructions to say what it was for.
Thanks for you help. All working nicely now.

Does anyone know where you can get a bezel or cover of some sort to finish off this display once mounted in a box? I've looked everywhere but can't seem to find anything that is available off the shelf?
Thanks
Darrell

I'm not aware of a bezel for this screen but one option you may want to consider is 3D printing one. If you don't have the CAD skills to create a bezel you may be able to find something suitable on thingyverse.com and if you don't have access to a 3D printer there are people on places like etsy.com that will print your design, or even design and print it for you quite cheaply.

Just thought I'd suggest it as a possible option.
