Lead free is one solder to shy away from if your project is going spend extended operational life.
Some space satellites failed with parts supplied from the EU as these must be
RoHS compliant.
Why the failure?
There's this phenomenon not well understood "Tin Whiskers". This came to my notice when leads
of components I had in storage had a rough texture feel when held in between my fingers.
After googling came across the issue.
You can look up the subject "Tin Whiskers".
Cheers.

Where I would personally agree that solder containing lead is better in terms of being easier to work with, the sale leaded solder has become very restricted over the past couple of years because of the potential health hazards. It is now prohibited to sell solder containing lead with a greater concentration of 0.3% to general consumers.
