You have access to the LED anode via the pin LED_A. You should be able to apply a PWM signal to this via a transistor or FET. One thing to note is that if you are using it with the Arduino adapter shield, the shield doesn't provide access to this pin as it powers the backlight via a permanent 3.3V ...
