Sorry. forgot the bit about the OS, it is 32bit on my XP machine and 64bit on my Win7 Laptop.

Using the utility supplied with the driver I identified the chip in the board as a PL2303 XA/HXA. With the chip you tried programming (16F877A) did your hex file program any of the EEPROM???

I don't know whether this helps or not, but the reset fails irrespective of a chip being in the programmer. also does not make any difference what chip is selected........

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately that is the driver I have installed on my Desktop - I downloaded it yesterday for a USB to TTL lead I had purchased for this project. I have unloaded the driver on my laptop and installed the version from the link you provided. I still have the same problem.....
