Yes I expect the firmware is different because until I reflashed the i2c scanner could not find any devices.

Ok I got it going.

First I had to rewrite the firmware as described here.

I also had to desolder the standby pad on the back of the shield so it can be controlled with i2c.

Yep I used the sketch at the top off the thread. I do see i2c traffic on pins d1 , d2 with the scope. I don't think there is any connection issue as I have been over the joints a few times and connected a second different shield to another wemos with the same results. Was this issue ever solved. I have exactly the same issue. No moving motors. A small dc voltage of the motor pins. The motor works. The serial console shows messages moving the motors.
