By default they should be on the same channel so in that sense there is nothing to configure. Can you make sure that all inputs I0-3 are pulled low and then try pulsing your channel 3 (pin 3) high and low to see if that makes your LED flash.

What is the operating temperature range for these modules? I'd like to be able to stick them outside in an IP66 enclosure, so they'd have to withstand being inside an enclosed box, while the climate also heats up, or if the outside temperature gets to be -20 or -30 celcius they would still need to function.

I'm afraid the manufacturer doesn't supply this information. However that said, I would suspect that the operating temperatures of these modules is limited by the sawtooth resonator on the transmitter module. Extreme temperatures will cause this part to drift off frequency. I've checked the datasheet for this part and its operating temperature is between -10 to + 60oC. So I would not expect them to work at the extreme temperature you specify.

Modules as supplied contain antenna coiled ( Maybe for ease of packaging). Will range be enhanced if antenna are straightened out and orientated into the same plane i.e. horizontal or vertical?

It's a difficult one to answer. Coiled antennas are usually less efficient than straight antennas. They tend used simply because of their compact size where although being less efficient they are a better compromise compared to reducing the length of the antenna. So straightening the antenna may improve the range but the modules design (probably not) may be tuned to the properties of the coiled antenna. If so straightening it may change its properties and de-tune the circuit. So in my opinion it probably would improve the range but could make it worse. If you have something you can wrap the wire around they are easy to reform after being straightened so the simplest solution may be to just try it.

I use the 433MHz HCMODU0087/88 modules in my own projects and found that a straight antenna does give me better range than a coiled version but then I am adding an antenna to it rather an modifying an existing one..
