Post Sonoff Basic - WiFi Wireless Smart Switch (HCSONO0001)

Sonoff is an affordable ESP8266 based device that provides users with smart home control. It is a WiFi based wireless switch that can connect to a wide range of appliances. Sonoff transmits data to a cloud platform through the WiFi router, which enables users to remotely control all the connected appliances, via the mobile application eWeLink. The Sonoff cloud server is an Amazon AWS global server.

Sonoff makes all home appliances smart. As long as your mobile has network, you can remotely control the connected appliances from anywhere at any time. Another feature available is to set timing schedules for appliances, which includes countdown timers and scheduled on/off times. This can make controlling lights/heating etc easier and avoid spending excess money on electricity bills if you forgot to switch of the light before you left for work for example.

Please note: This device requires connection to a mains power supply. You should not attempt to install this product yourself if you are unfamiliar with how to safely wire an electrical device to a mains electrical circuit. Always isolate mains power before attempting to connect this product.

This Sonoff version does not have 433Mhz RF remote function.

Supports status tracking, home appliances status, get feedback directly in the App.
Supports remotely turning connected devices on or off.
Supports single/repeat/countdown timing tasks for each device.
Supports numerous WiFi smart switches within one account.
Easy installation, easy handling and can be activated immediately.

EWeLink App
eWeLink is a smart home control app that can control all ITEAD home automation devices. It allows you to remotely control and manage your favourite smart devices in a single app. The smart home devices connect to home appliances and electronic devices via WiFi, allowing you to remotely control them through the app. There isn't a limit to the number of devices you can add to eWeLink, although iTead usually say around 150.

eWeLink Basic Functions:

Remote on/off
Countdown/schedule timer
Share control
Group/scene management
Scene/smart scene

You can download the latest iOS eWeLink from the Apple app store and Android eWeLink from Google Play.

Post Re: Sonoff Basic - WiFi Wireless Smart Switch (HCSONO0001)
I just wanted to outline my experience so far with items from the Sonoff range, all purchased from various suppliers from China on eBay over the past six months. The items include Sonoff Basic, TH10/16 and Sonoff SV. They have been installed in various localities in addition to my home base.

The most common problem appears to be units not accessing the WiFi network after periods of working fine. These units are first deleted and reinstalled. They are recognised and go through all the motions of verification but then simply stay offline. This has happened with two Basics (after around three months working), a SV after around six months, three Th10s and one TH16 (a month or so.)

Another problem was the instability of a smart scene using a TH device with a Basic to switch a load depending on temperature. I found that the scene would only lock for around 40% of the time, even swopping with other units.

A novel observation with one of the Basic units is that each time it is triggered, it knocks out the WiFi modem! After the modem has recovered the unit can be accessed again but still kills the WiFi when triggered again.

I would be very interested to hear from others in the forum who may have had similar experiences and who may have advice to offer.

Are the problems which I have experienced down to faulty hardware, firmware or software?

As it stands, I would be of the opinion that these units, though cheap and easy to install, have definite quality control problems to the extent that I would not recommend them for any serious purpose.

It sounds like some sort of software or WiFi comparability/connection issue between your Sonoff devices and your router. I have several of these devices installed in my own home but I'm not using the stock firmware / smartphone app so I cannot directly compare my personal experience to yours. The problem is as the Sonoff devices are ESP8266 based and are very hack-able I suspect most of our customers will be doing the same thing and buying them to reflash with their own or open source software. So this forum may not be the best place to ask this question. I would be interesting for future reference though to know which model of router you have and if you have a high amount of wireless devices connected to it?
